In this article, we take a look at acrylic nails and everything you need to know about them to help you decide if they’ll be your next nail set.

What are Acrylic Nails?

In the simplest terms, acrylics is a nail system that combines a powder (polymer) and a liquid(monomer) to form a thick paste that air dries and forms the acrylic nails. How this paste is applied determines what is achieved on your nails.

monomer plus polymer complex in application of acrylic nails.

This thick paste can be applied directly to your natural nails to prevent breakage or can be used to extend the nails.

When the acrylic product is applied directly onto natural nails it’s called acrylic overlays. When applied on artificial tips it’s referred to as acrylic tip extensions and when it’s used to achieve length without the use of tips but nail forms are used instead it’s referred to as acrylic sculpting

What Acrylic Nail Services are Available at Luxe Nails Parlour?

Acrylic Overlay

A layer of Acrylic product (powder and liquid) is applied to the natural nail for strength and protection. It protects the natural nail from breakage thus allowing the natural nails to grow.

Acrylic Tip extensions

The artificial nail extension is applied close to the tip of the nail plate and blended, then an overlay of acrylic liquid and powder is applied on top, buffed, and shaped. Forming what most people refer to as acrylic tips.

Acrylic Ombre Tip extensions

The artificial nail extension is glued at the tip of the nail plate, blended, then an overlay of acrylic liquid and two-colored acrylic powders are applied to create a color gradient.

Acrylic sculpting

Process of sculpting an artificial nail

In this nail type, no nail extension or tip is applied. Instead, a nail form is slipped under the free edge of the nail plate. The acrylic product i.e. the liquid and powder are then applied on top of the nail form to get a molded longer nail.

How are Acrylic the Nails  Achieved?

Here’s a simple process that explains how we make sure that you get the best nails while keeping your natural nails safe:

  • First, the nail technician prepares your nails. This involves sanitizing your hands, pushing the cuticle back, and buffing and filing your nails.
  • An artificial tip is then glued to your nail to extend its length.
  • Remember the definition of acrylic nails? Here’s where it comes into play. The nail technician mixes the liquid and the powder into a paste and applies it to the nail. The way in which the mixture is applied will be dependent on which type of acrylic nail you are going for.
  • It is then allowed to set and air dry.
  • The coating is buffed and shaped
  •  Finally, the nail colour and nail art of your choice is then applied to the coating.

How Long Do They Last?

With proper maintenance, the nails should last about 10 weeks with maintenance infill between 2-3 weeks. To keep your nails safe and strong we recommend having the infill getting done by a professional.

At Luxe, we offer infill services and recommend having a maintenance appointment after 2 to 3 weeks of getting your acrylic nails, depending on how fast your nails grow.

Here are some benefits of having an acrylic refill/infill:

  • It helps the nail set last longer.
  • Improves the appearance of your nails as it leaves the nails looking as good as new.
  • Prevents nail lifting from occurring, which will save you from lots of nail trouble, trust me.
